STATEMENT BY YBHG DATUK SERI ANIFAH HAJI AMAN, ON STATE GOVERNMENT'S DECISION TO LOOSEN THE SOP UNDER PHASE 1 OF THE RECOVERY PLAN

DATUK ANIFAH HJ. AMAN

KOTA KINABALU (30 JUNE 2021): The Federal Government must respect the decision made by the Sabah State Government with regards to loosening the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) under Phase 1 of the National Recovery Plan (NRP), said
former Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Anifah Aman.

“The Sabah State Government is capable of addressing the situation in the state especially regarding the pandemic and I fully support the decision made by the State Government,” said Anifah, adding that decisions pertaining the wellbeing of the people of Sabah should not be made by desk bureaucrats from afar who do not fully comprehend the situation in Sabah.

The former Kimanis MP also said that it is unfair for Sabah which only has 242 cases be treated equally with Selangor which recorded 2836 cases.

“As long as the necessary SOPs are in place and if the authorities can ensure maximum compliance to the SOPs, the relaxing of SOPs for several sectors is a rational thing to do,” said Anifah, adding that he fully supports the decision made by Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Haji Noor to allow dine-ins in restaurants and eateries, as well as allowing barbershops, roadside stalls for vegetables, fish and fruits to operate on June 28.

“While we respect the decision and jurisdiction of the Federal Government in this matter which is a Federal List, the decision to loosen the SOP was made in consensus by all components of the Sabah ruling government and was decided by the State Disaster Management Committee of which representatives of Federal Government agencies such as the Health Department and National Security Council (NSC) were also present,” he said further.

He added that Sabah has shown a reduction in the number of daily cases and despite the severity of the pandemic, some sectors of the economy should be allowed to operate as long as the SOPs are adhered to.

“While we understand the Federal Government especially the NSC feels obliged to ensure control of this pandemic, we need to also realise that the economy is also the source of livelihood for our people.

“What is the point of saving lives from the pandemic but we end up losing more through suicides due to the depression that is in the air due to the economic toll caused by the continuous lockdown measures,” he said further.

“People are facing a tough situation now where income is hard to come by and as a result, they can’t feed themselves and their families. The government must come up with policies to balance the need to protect lives from the pandemic while ensuring that the livelihood of the people is not badly affected that could lead to an economic depression, which would ultimately be even more detrimental to us as a nation,” he added.
